An Overview of Supply Management

The raising and marketing of turkeys in Canada is federally regulated and managed through a system called supply management

Supply management ensures a high-quality, stable and secure supply of turkey achieved through production, import and pricing controls.

Under the supply management system, each province owns a quota, or an amount of turkey they are allowed to produce. In turn, provinces issue licenses to turkey farmers which permit them to grow a specified amount of turkey.

National and provincial quotas are based on what consumers want and purchase. This prevents shortages or oversupplies of turkey. Supply management also guarantees a fair and stable price for turkey and turkey products which benefits farmers, as well you, the consumer.

Supply management makes sure we don’t overproduce, so there is less waste. It also ensures that our small farm, managed by two people, can remain as a family operation.
